The New York Organ Donor Network (NYODN) would like to applaud Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State (NYS) Legislature for taking another important step to improve organ donation in New York. The state budget that was approved Tuesday, April 1st, 2014 will allow the NYS Department of Health to enter into a multi-year contract for the administration of the NYS Donate Life Registry, create an interagency workgroup dedicated to increasing organ, eye and tissue donation and allow for enrollment in the registry using an electronic signature supported by reasonable security measures that provide confidence in the identity of the person enrolling.
This partnership will help facilitate an improved registry that should lead to more organ donor enrollments, and, ultimately, more lives saved through organ donation. Standing 49th out of 50 states with regard to the percentage of state residents enrolled as organ donors, New York has significant room for improvement. NYODN congratulates the Governor and the state legislature for sending a clear message that the time for improvement is now.
