Heart Recipient Kelvin Smith Promotes Organ Donor Awareness With New Book
Author Kelvin Smith grew up as an extremely healthy athlete. Somewhere along the way, his heart began to fail him. After being hospitalized for three months, he began to jot down notes just in case. The “just in case” came and an angel saved his life. “The Unlikely Candidate- An Amazing Journey of a Heart Transplant a Patient” was written to inspire those to never say never.
To receive an organ is a miracle in itself but to have one work in unison with the rest of the recipient’s body is even more grandiose. After seeing patients pass away before getting the same chance he received, Kelvin knew he had to make a difference. His memoir draws on his strong faith, courage and the ever-changing medical world. The characters are real as is their pain and suffering. “The Unlikely Candidate “ shows a side of humanity only most can imagine. It will take the reader on a rollercoaster of emotions because Kelvin is able to find the good in the worst of situations. He leans heavily on his humorous side to make it through the long, lonely nights.
“Kelvin shares his pain, laughter and sorrow through a compelling use of irony, humor and truth as he comes to terms with needing a transplant to survive.” Helen Irving- CEO/President-NY Organ Donor Network.
It seems almost criminal that someone has to die for another to live. Kelvin doesn’t shy away from the obvious, in fact his mission: PAY IT FORWARD. He continues to help us understand how important organ donation really is. After reading “The Unlikely Candidate,” one comes away with a full understanding of the toll it takes on the recipient. It also pays homage to the donors who are the true heroes. For more information, contact Kelvin Smith Sr. at (845) 893-3453.
