- The New York Organ Donor Network (NYODN) is pleased to announce that 343,000 New Yorkers statewide have registered to be organ donors in 2013. Several factors have contributed to the number of registrations as NYODN continually seeks innovative and unique ways to encourage New Yorkers to enroll. This includes partnerships with the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Department of Health (DOH), Lauren's Law that went into effect October 2013, NYODN's voter registration and social media campaigns and the valuable community and corporate partners.
While great strides were made in 2013, much more is needed. Currently, New York ranks 49th out of 50 in percent of state residents who are registered as organ donors. In addition, over 10,000 New Yorkers are on the waiting list for a life-saving transplant. In fact, every 15 hours a New Yorker dies waiting for an organ that does not become available.
